Eye on Fallingwater - September 3rd-5th, 2022.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater
Fallingwater has long been a pilgrimage site for architects and architecture lovers alike. Frank Llloyd Wright’s crowning achievement, the house has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture” and most clearly exemplifies Wright’s philosophy of organic architecture -- what later came to be called his Prairie Style. Designed to be the weekend home for prominent Pittsburgh businessman Edgar J. Kaufman, the house is most widely recognized for its masterful incorporation of the surrounding natural beauty of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, including a waterfall in the Bear Run tributary of the Youghiogheny river. Wright’s vision for the construction sealed his reputation as a pioneer of 20th Century architecture, and has influenced generations of architects to come. Kentuck Knob & Polymath Park Nestled in the lush Allegheny Mountain woodlands, Fallingwater neighbors a number of other Frank Lloyd Wright constructions, Kentuck Knob and the houses at Polymath Park. Pittsburgh: An Architectural History All of these sites are just an hour drive south-east of Pittsburgh, itself an important architectural destination. Pittsburgh’s architecture tells the story of the quintessential American city, ranging from the precolonial blockhouses of French and Indian War, through to the grand victorian homes of Gilded Age Industrials, the stunning Gothic Revival buildings of Pittsburgh’s world-class universities, up to the glittering glass and steel offerings of the International style that celebrate the city’s renaissance.
